Caring for Your Sterling Silver Jewelry

Your sterling silver jewelry is a beautiful and timeless addition to your collection. To keep it looking its best, here are some simple care tips:

1. Regular Cleaning: Gently clean your silver pieces with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dust and oils. For deeper cleaning, use a specialized silver polishing cloth or a mild jewelry cleaner.

2. Storage: Store your silver jewelry in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and humidity. Consider using anti-tarnish pouches or containers to prevent tarnishing.

3. Avoid Contact: Keep your silver jewelry away from chemicals, perfumes, lotions, and household cleaners, as they can accelerate tarnishing. Always remove your jewelry before swimming or bathing.

4. Wear with Care: While sterling silver is durable, it can still scratch or bend. Be mindful of activities that may subject your jewelry to impact or abrasion, and remove it when necessary.

5. Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect your jewelry for loose clasps or links. If you notice any issues, please contact Madebyalda.

Caring for Your Gold-Filled Jewelry

Your gold-filled jewelry is a treasure to cherish. To keep its radiant shine for years to come, follow these simple care tips:

1. Keep it Clean: Gently wipe your jewelry with a soft, lint-free cloth after wearing to remove oils and sweat. For deeper cleaning, use a mild, non-abrasive soap and lukewarm water. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners.

2. Store with Care: Store your gold-filled pieces separately to prevent scratching. A jewelry box or pouch with compartments is ideal. Keep them away from direct sunlight, humidity, and extreme temperatures.

3. Avoid Contact: Remove your jewelry before swimming, showering, or engaging in activities that may expose it to chemicals, such as household cleaners or perfumes. Chlorine and certain chemicals can dull the gold layer.

4. Gentle Handling: Handle your jewelry with care to avoid unnecessary wear and tear. Put it on after applying cosmetics and perfumes to prevent chemical reactions.

5. Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect your jewelry for loose clasps or links. If you notice any issues, please contact alda@madebyalda.is.

Cleaning jewelry with gemstones

Sterling silver necklaces and rings containing gemstones are sometimes trickier to clean, depending on the type of stone. Probably the easiest and safest way is to use the soap method. The soap won't hurt your silver or your gem.

The dish soap method

Here are the general steps for cleaning your sterling silver gemstone jewelry using the dish soap method:

Separate lukewarm water into two bowls, add small amount of liquid dish soap into the first bowl. Soak your jewelry in the mixture of soap for 5-10 minutes. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently scrub the surface and any crevices. Once you've finished, rinse the piece in the second bowl with warm water and pat to try.
Be aware that immediately after cleaning, sterling silver jewelry may appear gray. This color is entirely normal and you have done nothing wrong.
